Strong Foundations, Major Expansion

This year’s Social Action Conference built upon the foundations of previous conferences, and looked to expand the breadth of knowledge in this key area. Celia Askwith (City Hope Church, Bermondsey) reviews the day. Seminar downloads are also available.

‘The day kicked off for us with breakfast in Bracknell market, then on to the conference. We started with a keynote talk from Mick Taylor on how Jesus’ perspective of social action was taught through stories and values rather than through results, though experiences are important.

We had booked into seminars before the event, and I chose to attend the ‘Starting a project from scratch’ workshop, where Julian Prior (City Church, Newcastle) shared from his heart about his own experience launching the Open Door project for failed asylum seekers. He emphasised that projects need to be God’s projects rather than our own, and the need to keep accountable to the church elders and to prepare for a project through local research, networking and planning to ensure sustainability.

We heard magnificent testimonies of God’s grace having changed individual lives, and were encouraged to grow a passion to be involved in local social action projects.  We were also challenged to get involved through prayer, vision, leading, working and giving.

Phil Clark closed the day with examples of how those in a social action project in Portsmouth have had their lives changed by God’s grace; shown through sacrificial unconditional love. Brilliant, but emotional!’

Seminars from the day were recorded and have been made available for audio download here.
