God’s Lavish Grace in Dubai
By Wendy Virgo
Those yellow T-shirts were everywhere like a flock of canaries: directing traffic in the car park, handing out cups of tea, serving food, welcoming guests. It was a big night for the new Gateway International Church in Dubai, and everyone was involved from the oldest to the youngest. Matt Redman and his band were leading worship and Terry was preaching on God’s Lavish Grace.
Clive Cernik writes:
We are still buzzing with the massive effect of God’s Lavish Grace here in the Emirates. The church has been utterly thrilled with every aspect of those few days, both with Terry’s teaching on Grace (parts 1 & 2!) and Matt’s worship-leading. It is hard to describe the feeling of excitement, thankfulness and wonder. The event transcended all our best hopes. Andy Thompson, the Assistant Chaplain at Jebel Ali Anglican Compound rang me the day after. He said that it was “nothing short of miraculous” that we gathered such a huge crowd to meet and worship together. He said it was amazing to see so many different churches with their leaders standing side by side.’
Almost 2,000 people turned up on that Thursday, yet the event could so easily have been cancelled.
The organisers had difficulty in booking a hotel venue. The Anglican Compound church in Jebel Ali had come to the rescue, graciously allowing the God’s Lavish Grace three-day conference to take place there. Then His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum (the Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai) died and all events in public venues were cancelled. Because it was in a church compound the conference was able to go ahead!
As well as the enormously successful Thursday night, Terry spoke to 150 leaders from right across the UAE on the Wednesday night, and 100 worship leaders attended Matt Redman’s seminar in the afternoon.
There has been much appreciative feedback on the appropriateness of the Grace message. People came from Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Oman as well as the Emirates. Also, 50 visitors came to the Gateway International Church meeting on Friday. The Gateway church was much encouraged and those bright yellow T-shirts are treasured souvenirs! |
