In Brief

Terry in North West USA

Terry welcomed Prairie Avenue Christian Center, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, led by Ted Hoit, into the Newfrontiers family. Also he greatly enjoyed his visits to Clark Fork City Church in Missoula, Montana, and The River Center in Lebanon, Oregon, where there was a wonderful outbreak of healings. The River Center will be joining Newfrontiers imminently.

Excerpt from text messages from Edward Buria, Kenya

‘Can’t keep this to ourselves. The new season gained momentum over the weekend with over 10,000 hearing the gospel in a very remote part of Kenya. Over 300 born again, amazing healings and a church plant in a 3-day programme. Hallelujah! His kingdom advances further.’

And another, more recently:
‘Just received very sad news that we have lost three persons due to on-going famine ... Things are as serious as in 1994.’
(N.B. 10 million thought to be near starvation in Kenya.)

Terry and Wendy with Mars Hill elders

Terry and Wendy enjoyed a very warm reception from Mark Driscoll and the 40 elders of Mars Hill church, Seattle, together with their wives. Terry spoke at five sessions and Wendy addressed the wives for one. Fascinating Q&A opportunities followed each talk, the first of which was the story of Newfrontiers. Several were healed at the conclusion of one talk.

At a glance

Why the emphasis on preaching?

As a family of churches, we exist because we responded to what the Bible teaches about God’s desire for His church. This attitude of radical obedience and faith mustn’t be allowed to lapse. The preaching and teaching of the Bible must continue to shape and enthuse us: what kind of church, what kind of home, what kind of ambitions?

The Gospel Of Grace

‘I took my seat amongst the crowds. It was my first time at a Christian conference. I was seventeen and had been a believer for a few months. Slowly an elderly man shuffled across the platform, grasping the podium as much to steady himself as to speak from it. Foolishly I wondered what on earth he could have to say that was relevant to me…’

Baptism into Christ and the Spirit

When Paul wrote Romans 6, he linked our victory over sin to our baptism ‘into Christ’. To be saved is to know that your life is now ‘hidden with Christ in God’ (Col. 3:3); this is our primary baptism – into him. Water baptism is a consequential demonstration of this reality.

Striking gold in the Copperbelt

August 2009 saw a great celebration weekend at Kitwe in the Copperbelt area of Zambia, when a group of six churches and church plants were welcomed into the Newfrontiers family. It was a noisy, colourful, joyful and international affair, with visitors from South Africa and the UK as well as other parts of Zambia.

Joseph and Lillian Mwila head up Dayspring Ministries. Their first church in Kitwe was started seven years ago, since when they have established churches in the nearby towns of Chingola and Chambishi, and begun plants in Luanshya and also two other areas of Kitwe. In addition to this they have established two orphanages with around 20 boys and 20 girls, skills workshops and feeding programmes – all of this an essential part of church life in a very poor nation ravaged by HIV/AIDS and malaria.

Joseph and Lillian’s friendship with Newfrontiers began in the UK in 2004 when they were introduced to Rob and Helen Coleman at Bolton Family Church. Links were soon established with Gary and Nicky Welsh (Somerset West, South Africa), Gary already overseeing work into Zambia.

What does the future hold for Zambia as part of our Newfrontiers family? Well the next major step is combining resources in order to plant a church into Lusaka, the capital city, planned for autumn 2010.

And where have we struck gold? In the obvious passion for God and vision for His purposes that we found in the hearts of the wonderful people of Zambia.

Healing testimony

I had an operation on my shoulder last November, but still no healing – bad pain, very limited use etc. I’d had loads of prayer for it too. Then, in January, I was having a one-day prayer retreat and worshipping God on my own. I lifted my good arm in worship and just said in my head, ‘Lord I wish I could lift both arms to you.’ And immediately I heard His voice saying, ‘Well, why don’t you then?’ So I did, and my arm was freed! I was able to raise it high and use it in a way I hadn’t for a year! I was very excited, and the rest of my prayer time saw me in tears of joy and lifting my arms up and down like a lunatic!
