Virus Protection - Always have an upto date virus protection piece of software on you computer, as well as a firewall if using broadband. A excellent, and much cheaper, alternative to Norton or McAfee is AVG, who also do discounts for charities. Check out their website www.avguk.com
Backup - Regular backing up to an external hard drive is not often done, but can be achieved fairly cheaply, and reliably. Simply purchase a external hard drive, and use the software that will come with it.

Software can be purchased at a discount through some of the charity sector discount resellers Civica (www.civica.co.uk) or Charity Technology Trust (www.ctt.org). However there is an increasingly popular alternative to many of the purchased packages, and it is called Open source software.
