Operation Trumpet Call

by Adrian Willard, Brighton, UK

Shout it aloud, do not hold back. Raise your voice like a trumpet.

So begins Isaiah 58, the chapter that has shaped and named Operation Trumpet Call, a daring project to feed up to one million families in Zimbabwe through the church over five years.

Zimbabwe has been in crisis for well over ten years with little obvious hope at present of a recovery. Yet where all other worldly systems are failing, God is proving His church to be a trustworthy agent for bringing sustained humanitarian assistance to the nation.

Rallying cry

‘Radical faith, radical living, radical mission has become the rallying cry of Operation Trumpet Call,’ says Bulawayo–based Peter Cunningham, Chairman of OTC. Newfrontiers in Zimbabwe with Foundations for Farming have joined with the Evangelical Fellowship of Zimbabwe to sound this call to true repentance from old ways into genuine faith in Jesus, which results in transformed lifestyle and a mission to the lost, poor and hungry.

In order to achieve this, 100 people are being trained once a month in at least two venues, Bulawayo in the south and Harare in the north, over the 2009/10 agricultural season. Each month they receive theological teaching as well as training in the practice and principles of Foundations for Farming. The goal is that these 100 will then return to their churches and train up to 100 others in their communities, which could translate into 10,000 families being taught to grow food to feed themselves on a sustainable basis.

Breathtaking opportunity

Over the following four years the hope is that the project will be trebled each year which could result in over one million rural families being equipped not only to feed themselves, but to raise a profit from their land and drastically improve the productivity of the nation as a whole. Should this become a reality it is breathtaking to imagine just what transformation could take place and what a mighty impact this could have on other countries in Africa. And the church is the driving agent!

Scott Marques and his team ask that you join with us in prayer for the OTC team as they conduct this huge logistical challenge amidst deteriorating infrastructure and a difficult economic and political climate. Please pray that the gospel will go out with great power which will effect a change of heart, and result in a radical change in lifestyle and mission.
