Training Track 1 - The Centrality of Worship

Host: David Holden

This track looks at the vital role of worship in everything we do and how we need to see the positive effects that happen when we keep worship central to our lives as leaders and in our churches. Have we really restored worship or just changed a few tunes?

Wednesday - The Centrality of Worship in the Life of a Leader

Speakers: David Holden & Greg Shepherd
If you as a leader are too busy to worship then that has a direct result on your congregation. We will see what happens when we worship and how negative it becomes when we don’t. This could transform your life and ministry!

Thursday - The Centrality of Worship as We Gather as a Local Church

Speakers: David Holden & Stef Liston

What should corporate worship actually be? Should it be spontaneous? For believers or unbelievers? Is it more than just singing songs? What is charismatic worship? And what really pleases the heart of God?

Friday - The Centrality of Worship in Mission

Speakers: David Holden & Greg Shepherd

As we plant churches and reach new nations, is it important to keep worship as a key ingredient in all we do? How does worship give room for the supernatural?  Whether cross-cultural or cross-generational, there are values in worship that should never change wherever you are.

Training Track 2 - Parenting, Marriage and Sex

Hosts and speakers: P-J & Ashleigh Smyth

God’s intent is homes brimming with laughter, fun and a bias towards mission for God on earth. This track will help us create such an environment.

Wednesday - Parenting 1
The one about having a big vision for little people, growing upbeat kids, and making the choice between being SuperDad or SuperDud.

Thursday - Parenting 2
The one about raising obedient, well-mannered and believing children.

Friday - Marriage
The one about serving, submission and sex – you know the three Biblical biggies for a great marriage.

Training Track 3 - To the Ends of the Earth: Evangelical Mission in the Modern Age

Host: Andy Johnston

The 100th anniversary of the World Missionary Conference in Edinburgh (June 14-23) marked the culmination of 19th century mission. This Track aims to envision and inspire us with the passion and commitment for the next 100 years to evangelise the unreached and the marginalised.

Wednesday - General Booth and the Salvation Army
Speaker: Lex Loizides
"We believe in the old fashioned Salvation. We have not developed and improved into Universalism, Unitarianism or Nothingarianism....  Ours is just the same salvation taught in the bible, proclaimed by Prophets and Apostles and preached by Luther and Wesley and Whitefield!" - William Booth.
Let’s enjoy some of the daring, bold and passionate energy of the early Salvation Army!

Thursday - William Carey: From Cobbler to the Father of Modern Missions
Speaker: Ray Lowe
William Carey started life as a cobbler but after his conversion as a young man was fascinated and intrigued by distant lands and strange peoples. Fuelled by Captain Cook’s voyages to unknown exotic places, he and his friends pioneered the way for world mission. What he achieved was beyond human possibility.

Friday - Eric Liddell: Muscular Christianity and Missionary Service
Speaker: Andy Johnston
Scotland’s greatest ever sportsman, Eric Liddell gave up fame and fortune within a year of winning Olympic gold to go to Tianjin, China, where he lived and worked until his death in a Japanese internment camp. Discover how living for Jesus really was the inspiration behind all that Liddell achieved.

Training Track 4 - Tracking Theological Trajectories

Host: Mick Taylor

Some books have a significant impact on the way we think about God, His church and our mission. This track explores three recent books which have endeavoured to give the church ‘course corrections’ on how we understand and implement our mission. Each session will be led by a member of the Newfrontiers Theology Forum.

Wednesday - Reinventing Apologetics: The Reason for God
Speaker: Andrew Wilson
Tim Keller’s recent book has been massively influential in defining 21st century apologetics, but he has some controversial things to say about issues such as evolution and hell. How should we process what he is saying?

Thursday - Hero or Heretic? – Velvet Elvis
Speaker: Adrian Birks
In his book Velvet Elvis, Rob Bell claims to be ‘repainting the Christian faith’, and yet he has come in for criticism over his message and has even been branded a heretic. Should we dismiss his ideas, or is he making a valuable contribution to contemporary Christian thinking?

Friday - The Last Word on the Last Things? – Surprised by Hope
Speaker: Mick Taylor
Tom Wright, the bishop theologian, seems unable to write a dull sentence – or publish without stirring up debate. In his exposition of eschatology, Surprised by Hope, he has done it again. Delightful or disturbing?

Training Track 5 - The Nation Builders

Hosts: Scott Marques & Dr Shana

Have you ever considered the ‘double entendre’ of Christ’s instruction to ‘disciple the nations’ (Matt. 28:19)? We know it means to make individual disciples of different nationalities, but the Bible and church history also record Christ-followers as shaping government policy and standing before Presidents. Come and hear those that are doing this kind of thing today!

Wednesday - Building Counter-Intuitively
Speakers: Scott Marques
When it comes to the coming of Christ’s kingdom in a nation, slow is fast, inside is out, and weak is strong.

Thursday - Building Confidently yet Humbly
Speakers: Scott Marques & Dr Shana
Dr Shana shares his story of promotion to influence in Zimbabwe, and some principles and practices of nation-building in any context.

Friday - For Such a Time as This!
Speakers: Scott Marques & Tapiwa Chizana
Enough said! Here’s how to move onward and upward. The church as an agent for change and impact in society.

Training Track 6 - Faithful & Fruitful: The Lion, the Bear and the Bulldog

Host: Matthew Hosier

Whether young, middle-aged, or mature, life brings challenges and demands. How can we be faithful and fruitful at every stage of our lives? How can different generations help, learn from and support one another?
Each day will focus on a particular age group. That age group to speak to those of other ages about the ways in which they need to be helped and understood.

Wednesday - Faithful & Fruitful: The lion, the Bear and the Bulldog
Speakers: Matthew Hosier & Panel of Matthew, Tim Blaber, Malcolm Kayes and Don Smith
Youth is the time when we are most energetic and imaginative, and when we consider the changes we want to make to the world. It is also a time for building strong foundations, and developing habits that lead to sanctification rather than sin. We will consider how young lions can be faithful and fruitful, and hear what they have to say to those who are older.

Thursday - The Bear: 35-55
Speakers : Malcolm Kayes & Panel as above
The grizzly bear is the most powerful of all land animals, with awesome strength and a reputation for wisdom. In our middle years we too should be resolute and strong, unflappable and astute. But it is also a time when we can get a bit grizzly! We will encourage the bears to use their strength to the glory of God.

Friday - The Bulldog: 55+
Speakers: Don Smith & Panel as above
The bulldog is tenacious and has jowly features! In maturity there should be a resilience and doggedness that means we never let go. It can also feel as though the lions and bears get all the attention and our experience is overlooked. We will let a bulldog get his teeth into us and encourage the mature to keep the faith and keep producing fruit.

Training Track 7 - 21st Century Mission

Host: Joel Virgo

The apostles were accused of ‘turning the world upside down’. What does that look like, and how is it done? What will it take to crack cities and societies open for Jesus? We will unpack Acts 19 as a picture of apostolic mission at its best.

Wednesday - Regions, Cities, Leaders and Foundations
Speaker: Joel Virgo & Stephen van Rhyn
Where should we focus in on, with the gospel? Paul targeted Ephesus and opened up a whole world, showing the need for partnership between urban and regional mission. How should leadership function in relationship to team? What are the first issues to be addressed in gathering a team? How do we handle differences and difficulties at foundational level?

Thursday - Gospel, Engagement, Idols and Miracles
Speakers: Joel Virgo & Lex Loizides
What was Paul’s method of urban mission? With the Jews Paul spoke about the ‘kingdom of God’, with the Greeks he ‘reasoned’. Wanting to engage different cultures, he was sensitive to context. The gospel we preach will challenge idols, and cause power structures and value systems of our cities to topple. The reason to believe is cogent, persuasive – and miracles happen!

Friday - Culture, Influence, Kickback and Courage
Speaker: David Stroud
How can our church planting lead to massive change in the life of our towns and cities? How do we deal with ferocious opposition? What principles and strategies can we learn that will help us maximise the effect of the gospel in our communities?

Training Track 8 - Everything

Host: David Stroud

‘The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it.’ How must we live in order to see real change in our culture? How can we affect the worlds of media, business, the arts and education and live in such a way that our communities change?  Be equipped to make a real difference! Each session will include teaching, stories, Q&A and times of ministry.

Wednesday - Changing Culture: The Big Challenge
Speaker: David Stroud
What will real change look like in our world? How do you and I bring about such change? David Stroud and others will teach and share stories of how God has used them to make a difference in their world.

Thursday - The Day-to-Day Challenge of Changing Culture
Speaker: Matt Hatch
This session will look at the ‘so what?’ of changing culture:
•    What does changing culture mean for me at 9am on a Monday morning?
•    How should it impact the way we lead our churches?
•    How can mums change culture?
•    How do we release everybody into everyday mission and discipleship?

Friday - Changing Culture through a Biblical Worldview
Speaker: Joel Virgo
‘The Bible is authoritative on everything of which it speaks. And it speaks of everything’ (Cornelius Van Til). We are called to change culture, but to what? Believers need a worldview on all aspects of life. Where do we get this – the culture of the Bible? How do we discern unbiblical worldviews? How should we respond to them?

Training Track 9 - Equipping Leaders and Churches for Healing the Spirit, the Mind and the Emotions

Host: David Devenish

The gospel of the kingdom is intended to set people free from the power of habitual sin, emotional strongholds and demonic influences. This track is to help equip us to bring genuine pastoral care as we apply the Word of God and the power of the Holy Spirit to people’s lives.

Wednesday - The Gospel that Brings Freedom
Speaker: David Devenish
What is the relationship between the truth of our freedom in Christ and the practical reality of oppression in people’s lives, including mental health issues?

Thursday - Freedom through the Power of the Holy Spirit
Speaker: Simon Holley
This session will equip us to help release others through deliverance ministry and healing of emotional pain.

Friday - Building Churches that Bring Freedom
Speaker: David Devenish & Simon Holley
Be equipped as leaders in counselling and power ministry, and enable your churches to be safe places where these issues are wisely handled. We will look at examples of how we can do this, answer questions and have a time of prayer and prophetic ministry as the Holy Spirit may lead.

Training Track 10 - Fighting for Charismatic Life in the Church

Host: Guy Miller

The battle for charismatic worship in the 60s is in danger of being surrendered to the coolness and professionalism of front-lead worship band leaders. Is the holy fire and theological conviction that give rise to dynamic charismatic meetings in danger of becoming a domesticated fireside hearth of ease and comfort?

Wednesday - The New Battle for the Charismatic
Speakers: Guy Miller & Stef Liston
The danger of tame Christianity with familiar gathering will be challenged, bringing with it an expectation for divine encounter through the use of spiritual gifts.

Thursday - The Urgency for the Prophetic
Speaker: Phil Wilthew
Sound the trumpet and make it clear! The gift of prophecy can change a situation, a life and a church. Time will be given for prophetic ministry.

Friday - The Diversity of the Spirit’s Manifestation
Speakers: Guy Miller & Simon Walker
What exactly are the charismata and how do we release and encourage their use in diverse situations? This session will impart the diversity of the Spirit’s gifts to the church.

Training Track 11 - Armed and Dangerous!

Host: Wendy Virgo

Women face many battles. God wants us to be winners! We identify some areas of conflict and how to move from defeat to being victors.

Wednesday - The Battle for Identity: From Victim to Victor
Speaker: Wendy Virgo
Obsession with diets, the pursuit of permanent youth, the celebrity culture, the sexualisation of society, all conspire to make women feel anxious and inadequate. How can we help our women to walk in victory instead of defeat?

Thursday - The Battle of Materialism
Speaker: Beverley Landreth-Smith
Beverley will seek to bring practical and biblical solutions to the ongoing struggle that women face to have a contented spirit in this ever enticing world of the 'have' and ‘have-some-more’ society we live in.

Friday - The Battle and Worship
Speaker: Liz Holden
Kneeling worshipping or standing worrying? An attitude of worship keeps you in a place of confidence.

Training Track 12 -  I can’t preach on that!

Host: John Hosier

All of the Scripture is God-breathed and useful to equip us for every good work. However, some subjects and books are more challenging to preach than others. We will be exploring some of the more demanding areas for preachers to tackle, looking at content, how to shape up preaching material and how to connect relevantly with our listeners.

Wednesday - Preaching the Old Testament
Speaker: Greg Haslam
Everything the Old Testament teaches about God remains true today. Sadly, few are even listening. It’s time we heard the Lion roar again! It’s time to recapture a passion for the Old Testament, its faithfulness to truth, its submission to our great God and preaching that’s truly prophetic. Daniel will be our focus.

Thursday - Preaching Revelation
Speaker: John Hosier
The last book of the Bible is often avoided by preachers either because it appears too difficult or because it seems to be ground for wild and sensational End Times material. But this book is about God’s ultimate victory over all things and is utterly relevant in these days of world-shaking events and terrorism.

Friday - Preaching on Sex
Speaker: Stephen van Rhyn
If we are seeking to equip people to live in a God-honouring way then sex isn’t a topic that we can avoid. How do we preach on sex in a way that is culturally relevant and biblically faithful? How do we handle culturally charged subjects like homosexuality? How do we ensure that we are answering the questions people are really asking? This session will reveal all!
