New Nation Community Church Plant
Port Elizabeth, South Africa
Alastair Buchanan gives an update on a recent church plant into Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
Two weeks ago some friends invited me to a popular Food Market in the North Western part of Port Elizabeth. When we arrived we were amazed that in the crowd of around 500 there was not a single black face to be seen. The next day in the large crowd at another popular public spot in the city, there was hardly a white face to be seen.
Although many churches in Port Elizabeth aren’t like this any more, most still are. At New Nation we believe God is calling His church to play a prophetic role in South Africa to exhibit something supernaturally different in our city.
So, one of our key values is that we are intentional about being cross-cultural (see our ‘Vision & Values’ on www.newnation.org.za). In the run up to New Nation’s official launch just under a year ago, we had asked God to help us with this. As you can see from the pictures God is answering us and we have a diversity of people among us. Please pray that “through the church God will make His multi-coloured wisdom known” to Port Elizabeth. We also asked God for conversion-growth as opposed to transfer-growth. By God’s saving grace, we have now baptized ten new people, seven of them coming to Christ through our ministry. By the end of last year all ten were attending regularly. Please pray for many more to be clearly saved this year.
We were delighted when Steve van Rhyn visited us with Terry Virgo recently. Terry prayed for a Hindu lady named Maggie who told me about a month later over supper that for over a decade previously, she had continuous pain and 20 back operations. Since Terry prayed for her, she has had no pain whatsoever! Praise God! Please pray she comes right through and for more signs following the preaching of the gospel. Finally, please pray for:
- Catching God’s heart and being missional, as He is!
- Ongoing confidence in the preaching of the gospel of Jesus’ death, resurrection and the gift of His Spirit.
- For God to bring us more families with children.
- Our recent move to our new venue. Moving to a morning meeting soon and then later to an evening meeting. And then possibly, to a second venue towards the end of the year.
- But most of all we want to delight together in God Himself for Himself.
Much love,
Alastair Buchanan (Church Plant Leader)
