Changing the Expression of Christianity in Nepal

The stunning, mountainous Kingdom of Nepal has historically been a remote, landlocked region, closed to the gospel until the 1950s.

Hindus find faith in Jesus andSince then there has been a great story being written as this predominantly Hindu nation has seen hundreds of churches planted and many embracing Jesus as Lord and saviour. Many of these early converts experienced the scorching fire of persecution as the seed of the gospel took root.

Our involvement as Newfrontiers in Nepal began in 2002 when Dave and Amber Lockyer and John Pradhan from our church in Shillong, India moved to plant a church in Pokhara. This is a fast-growing city set in a broad valley in the Western foothills, in the shadow of the mighty Himalaya. Dave and Amber returned to the UK in 2003 and John  has continued to bring leadership to the church plant since then, with the encouragement of visits from friends in the UK and India. There have been a number of years of great adventure mixed with disappointment, heartache and some wonderful stories of God’s interevention.
Himalaya
In 2008 John and Esther’s two year old daughter, Aradhana fell down a narrow 60 foot chasm and was trapped for 22 hours as a rescue team tried in vain to reach her. Eventually a 12 year old boy who was a bit of a ‘street urchin’ was lowered down and managed to retrieve her. The drama of this was broadcast live across the nation and Aradhana, John and the boy became known nationally. Throughout the ordeal John was able to proclaim publicly his faith in Jesus as the deliverer and has had a number of opportunities to bring glory to God as a result.

A local church emergesOver time a local church has emerged.  This has grown from a dozen people meeting in John’s living room to a regular gathering of about 40, most of whom are new believers from a Hindu background who have heard the gospel and been baptised as a result of John’s evangelistic zeal. There are some great stories of salvation and healing and  they are now at an exciting time of growing and becoming established.

A new meeting hallIn the past 12 months John and Esther have moved into a new home and John has overseen the building of a meeting hall on the flat roof above them. This will accommodate the season of growth they believe God is giving them. The church is called Himalayan Anugraha Church (Himalayan Grace Church) and is a vibrant family who love the Spirit and have a vision to grow and plant into other regions of Nepal.
